Jan Christiansen has spent his life at the intersection of music, hospitality, and human connection. A musician himself, Jan began by playing in—and invariably managing—the bands he joined, shaping not only the music but also the identity, strategy, and creative partnerships around it. His parallel work in education and mentorship became equally foundational, informing an artist-management philosophy that is part strategist, part advocate, and part player’s coach. He understands the vulnerability of making something personal and putting it into the world, and believes an artist’s career should be built around the whole person—not merely the product.

Jan is deeply intentional about the people he works with and the culture built around them. Furaha is not simply a roster, but an interconnected creative ecosystem: its artists, writers, producers, musicians, and collaborators continually contribute to one another’s projects, exchanging ideas and helping the work evolve. Jan sees himself as the gardener of that ecosystem—recognizing what is singular in each artist, creating the conditions for it to grow, and cultivating relationships that allow everyone’s work to become stronger. His standard for the music itself is simple but demanding: real music should be both timeless and timely—rooted deeply enough to endure, yet alive to the moment in which it is made.

That same philosophy extends through the larger Furaha ecosystem. Through Furaha Artists, Furaha Sound, and his work at music-centered spaces including Kaytranada’s Apartment 200, Anderson.Paak’s Andy’s, and LIVING ROOM, Jan has created a natural meeting point between artists, audiences, and opportunity—with hospitality underpinning it all. The name Furaha, meaning “joy” in Kiswahili, was inspired by the times he spent living in East Africa and reflects the question at the heart of his work: What if joy were a metric of success? Music may sometimes travel through grief, longing, or uncertainty, but it has always offered a path toward connection—and, ultimately, a path back to joy.
