David Michael Ott

David Michael Ott

David Michael Ott is a sought-after producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and mixing engineer based in Los Angeles. Equally at home writing for stage and screen, producing records or shaping a final mix, David brings a rare breadth of musicianship to everything he touches. He began playing at an early age and went on to master violin, saxophone, bass, guitar, drums and piano—an instrumental fluency that continues to inform his dynamic, visceral approach to composition and production.

David produced and mixed songs across four seasons of the hit Fox series Empire, including “Hemingway” and “Come Undone.” His credits also include playing keys and contributing additional production to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Footprints,” featuring CeeLo Green—an especially meaningful opportunity to work alongside his childhood musical heroes and longtime mixing mentor, Neal Pogue.

In recent years, David has expanded further into composing for stage and screen. He wrote the music and contributed lyrics to the original musical The Day the Sky Turned Orange, which premiered with the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Company in 2025, and has composed scores for film. His work also extends into music technology and digital media, including the creation of original sound libraries for YouTube.

Throughout his career, David has collaborated with artists and musicians across generations and genres, including Cynthia Erivo, Cimafunk, MALIA, and members of Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire. Whether composing, producing, performing or mixing, he approaches each project in service of the same goal: creating music that feels immediate, emotionally resonant and built to last.
